     Vol.  147

This Week:  Instead of a program this week, we discussed preparations and planned for our Kiwanis 80th birthday party.  We have decided to hold it on July 30th from 5-8pm at the United Community Bank Pavillion.  More information to come…

50/50:  John’s number was drawn for the 3rd week in a row!  However, he still didn’t win the $493 pot!  Sorry John!

Bingo:  Last week was a sad bingo week with only $497 made.  This week is the Angels; maybe we can do better?

Notes:  Please keep our pal, Ron Beckey in your prayers.  He has been hospitalized to have cancer (throat?) removed.  Hurry and get well Ron; we miss you!

The 4th of July parade is Saturday, the 2nd and so far only 2 members have stepped up to be in it!  Tony and Ted will carry the banner.  If enough people can help, we can get a float together.  Please contact one of them if you can help.

I really need some older Kiwanis pictures/stories/items for the 80th celebration.  I will put these posters/banners together, but I need more.  Please let me know what you have or can come up with.  Thanks!

Birthdays:  Mike Maginn 6/25; Pete Folger 6/26; Steven Miracle 6/28.

Anniversaries:  Ron and Patty Beckey 6/21.

Quote:  Something we don’t hear much… “I hate to agree with Kevin…” ~Tommy Vannoy and “I might be wrong, but…” ~Kevin Panter   We may never hear these again!

This Week:

We had an interclub at this week’s meeting.  Members from the Ringgold club were presented with a check to help their community with the tornado damage.  We are happy to be able to help our fellow Kiwanians!

This week’s program was presented by C.J.  He spoke to the club about bedbugs.  His talk was very informative.  He taught us how bedbugs are spread, treated (heat/cold) and how the best is prevention (be aware).  He informed the club how to check for them before staying in hotels and which cities/states are infestated the worst (Ohio).  Alex, our Jr. member,  said this was the coolest program ever!  Thanks CJ.

Beth Daniel, Outreach Coordinator Georgia Mountain’s Health, accepted a check to assist with their annual Back to School Bash.  The bash will be held 7/23 from 8a-12p and will include free school supplies, dental, medical, and vision screenings and more.  These are great services to offer to the community!

50/50:  John’s name was drawn (again)!  But, once again, he didn’t win the pot!  It is now up to $476!  There are only 25 cards left guys, so the odds are getting better!

Bingo:  Last week we made $900.  This week is the McGinn Team.

Rodeo:  Kevin is teaching and assisiting Gary this year with the rodeo.  The rodeo is Aug 19th and 20th, so please make sure to mark your calendars.  Please plan on working; it takes almost all of us to make our rodeo successful.  We are looking for sponsors and people, groups, or businesses to fill up the inside booths.  Even if you are not on the rodeo committee, let us know if you have any ideas.  All help is appreciated.  If you have any questions, you can call Gary, Kevin, or send me an email.

Notes:  Tony will be installed as a Verger with his church on 7/18 at St. Luke’s at 3pm.  He has invited the club to be a part of this special event.  Please try to attend and support our fellow Kiwanian.  Congrats Tony!

Birthdays:  CJ Green 6/6; Milton Hunt 6/16; Mike Maginn 6/25; Pete Folger 6/26; Steven Miracle 6/28.

Anniversaries:  Clarke and Gayle Mercer 6/2; Tom and Linda Patterson 6/4; Richard and Bette McClain 6/8; Ron and Patty Beckey 6/21.

Kiwanis Anniversaries:  Tom Patterson 6/1/08; CJ Green 6/9/97; Norman Kaye 6/11/79.

      Vol. 145

This Week:  This week was a board meeting.  As you can see by the length of this Buzz, there were many items discussed!

Next Week:  Next week’s speaker will be Mark Henson, Fannin Co. School Superintendent.

Bingo:  Last week made $892.  The super bingo was postponed to this week due to the snow; we know the Vannoy team can handle it!

50/50:  Tony’s name was drawn and we were all disappointed that he didn’t win the $276 pot.  Aww…

Birthdays:  Tom Patterson 2/10; Norman Kaye 2/16; Forrest Hamm 2/18.

Kiwanis Anniversaries:  None in Feb.  That means we need to recruit this month!

Wedding Anniversaries:  Pete and Kim Folger: 2/10/90; Mike and Jetta Brennan 2/14

Fair:  The board approved the committee’s request to proceed with negotiations with a new fair company, Carnival Tyme.  If all goes well, we will hold an old time county fair from Oct 18-22nd.  The committe is anticipating activities such as a pie eating contest, dunking booth, quilting contest, chili cook off and other community activities.

Rodeo:  Gary Keel has agreed to learn the ins and outs of the rodeo.  Kevin will mentor him to become the next Rodeo chairman.  Let’s all support the two of them as the rodeo is a great fundraiser for the club as well as a popular event for the community.

Notes:  The board has approved a leave of absence for Walt until the end of June.  However, this leaves an empty seat on the board.  Jerry was nominated and the election will be held next week to fill the position.

The STAR Student banquet will be held March 14th at 7pm at the Circle J.  We now have 2 STAR Students.  Please plan on attending this meeting.  The club has been sponsoring the STAR Student for over 50 years and in is important that we show our support to these bright kids.

Gay Mortimer’s memorial service will be held Monday, Feb 14th at 1pm at Blue Ridge United Methodist Chuch.  They are asking for donations be made to Brenau University in Gay’s name instead of flowers.

Our clubs’s 80th anniversary is July 22nd.  Ted, Wilda, Kevin, and myself will try to come up with a celebration for this occasion.  Several members have recommended a that we perform a community service project to go with it.  If you have any ideas, please let me know.  I think we can make this fun and productive! (and remember Ted…you left me and Wilda in charge…you get what you ask for!) ;)

This Week:  This week’s program was provided by Mike Maginn.  The speaker was Deena Gooch, Social Security Tech Expert.  Deena opened the Blue Ridge office in 1974, so she’s had plenty of experience dealing with all issues involved with SS.  She spoke to the club about retirement, Social Security, and Medicare.  This was very informative to those of us that have many, many, years left before we are able to retire! :)

Next Week:  Next week is a board meeting.

50/50:  Bill Howard’s name was drawn but he didn’t win the $261 pot.  Maybe next time…

 Div 11.  Vol. 143

This Week:  As you know, Kiwanis now recommends that all members have background checks.  Janice Taylor from Background Screenings and Security Solutions LLC discussed the process.  She explained that this will be done at a cost of $5/member and will be done every three years.  She told the club that these checks are made with the GBI, GCIS, and NCIS.  Sounds like it should all go pretty smoothly.

Next Week: Wilda has the program next week and she says it will be a surprise!

50/50:  Mike Maginn’s name was drawn, but he didn’t win the $178 pot.  Maybe next time…

Bingo:  Last week’s bingo made $1087…even if it was the Vannoy team!!  Next week is Thanksgiving, so no bingo.

Notes:  Gayle dropped by and told the club how Clarke is doing.  Apparently, he’s had a tough time of it and still has a long road ahead.  He should be discharged soon (maybe today) and will be transferred to a longer term facility for rehab.  He will either be near Emory or possibly at Heritage in Blue Ridge.  Gayle did request that if he is sent to Blue Ridge for members to visit weekly.  Although Clarke is having swallowing and speech difficulties as well as difficulties with movement, he is aware and appreciates everyone’s prayers, love, and concern.  Please remember to add Gayle to your prayers as this is a very difficult time for her.  Tony will continue to send updates to us…thanks Tony.

Remember Jere in your prayers.  He has been through a painful ordeal and suffered some terrible injuries.  I know that he appreciates how much we care about him.  The club has responded very well towards helping to raise the reward.  We continue to hope the attacker is captured before someone else is hurt.  The McConnell brothers will continue to keep us informed.

On a lighter note, our annual Christmas party will be December 20th at the Blue Ridge Swim and Tennis Club.  Social time begins at 6:30pm with the meeting and dinner to start at 7pm.  We will once again have the Chinese gift exchange.  The average cost for gifts are between $15-$20.  The menu is not finalized as yet but the cost to bring guests will be around $15 or $20.  This will be announced later.

Last week’s benefit bingo for the FCHS band made $1250.  Great amount for the band!

Mike Maginn awarded Tom Patterson with the 2009-2010 Kiwanian of the year!  Great job Tom!  We are lucky to have you in the club!

Birthdays: Ted “Moose” McConnell 11/20/50

BUZZ  9/27/10

  Div. 11  Vol. 142

This Week:  (as interpreted by Robert McFarland PhD)  This week’s guest speaker was David Cambell from the Appalachian Fresh Market.  This organization is an old-fashioned farmer’s cooperative, reminiscent of the attempts by the Farmer’s Alliance of the 1880s and the Populist Party of the 1890s to undermine the railroads, banks, and corporations (the parasites) that were keeping the farmers (the people) mired in poverty.  The Populist platform also called for the direct election of US Senators, government ownership of railroads and utilities, more democracy at the state level (the recall and referendum), and a progressive federal income tax.    In one form or another, all of this became reality a couple of decades after the Populists crashed and burned during the 1896 presidential election.  One of their most interesting ideas was a way to solve the problem of thousands of individual farmers selling their crops at the same time to distributors who set the price.  The Populists wanted the government to set up warehouses where the farmers could bring their crops, receive credits immediately so that they could pay their bills, and then federal managers would sell the warehoused crops at a higher price than individual farmers could. A version of this so-called subtreasury plan was actually enacted in the 1920s, but was replaced with the agricultural subsidies program during the Great Depression.   David Campbell is bringing it back in an equally interesting way at our Farmer’s Market.  Local farmers bring in their veggies, which are sold directly to consumers and are also sold in bulk to restaurants and grocery stores,  thereby liberating local farmers from the tyranny of the middlemen, as the Populists longed for so long ago.  (I hope you enjoyed this educational view!)

Bingo:  Bingo made $1,342!  Great job guys!!  This week is the Hamm Team.

50/50:  Walt Austin’s name was drawn, but he didn’t win the pot valued at $200+

Birthdays:  Kevin Panter 9/29…and yes, the women serenaded him beautifully today!

Notes: Steven tells us the Community Service Conference is Oct. 6th.  This year’s theme is Employment through Education and EntrepreneurshipHelp will be needed setting up.  Steven will send an email to let you know when this help will be needed.  If several show up it won’t take long.

Saturday is the annual GA MTN Health flushot and lab day.  Come by the Ellijay or Blue Ridge offices for your flu shot for $20 or a lab panel for $25, PSA $5 extra.  What a deal!

Satuday is the 2k walk/run to benefit Julie Weeks.  Please try to come out for a good cause.

This Week:  This week’s speaker was Michael Barilla from the St Vincent de Paul Society.  He described the mission of this society and how they give financial and spiritual help to the needy in our community.  Even though they have only 8 active members, they helped 242 households in Fannin County last year!  What a great thing they are doing!

Next Week:  We are having our 5th Monday meeting next week at the fairgrounds.  Wilda’s mom is cooking…YUMM! Come at 6:30 to socialize and the meal and meeting starts at 7pm.  Please email me at rmcfarl@tds.net to RSVP.  Let me know how many guests you will be bringing!  See ya then!

Bingo:  We made $1044 last week and this week is the Vannoy team.  Let’s see if he can reach $1000!

50/50:  Eddie’s name was drawn, but he didn’t win the $194 pot.  Maybe next time…

Rodeo:  Kevin gave us a rodeo report and first of all he wanted to thank everyone that helped bring this event to our community.  While we had rain and a slow economy this year, we still made $$ to help Fannin families.  We all feel that Kevin did a great job as usual, and hope he will continue to be our rodeo chair in the future.  We should all give ourselves a pat on the back!

Notes:  Remember that each member gets a meal at the Labor Day BBQ instead of a meeting.

Birthdays:  Richard McClain 8/7; Mike Brennan 8/13

Kiwanis Anniversaries:  No Kiwanis anniversaries in August…unless we sign Gary Keel up quickly!
